Baby play mats: cleaning and care

Updated 27 October 2026

Compare a play mat’s dimensions, stated materials and care instructions with the intended play area. A thickness measurement or decorative texture does not establish a developmental benefit.

Cleaning and care

Read the care instructions for each component before choosing a cleaning method. Do not assume that a household mixture, boiling water or a dishwasher cycle is suitable. Keep cleaning products in their labelled containers and follow their directions.

Information to check

Request the actual material and care information for the model, including any removable covers.
Check the floor space and storage dimensions; keep product dimensions separate from room-clearance advice.
Ask for evidence behind any specific material, slip-resistance or product-performance claim.

A play mat is not a substitute for an appropriate infant sleep surface. See the product-information guide for Australian safe-sleep resources.
